Why Medical Marijuana Works

Why Medical Marijuana Works

Simple Answer-

  • Cannabinoids tell the Body how to Repair itself.

Short Explanation-

Cannabinoids are the active molecules in cannabis which tell the Body how to repair itself.  Cannabinoids are unique because they send information backward … from the post-synaptic nerve back to the pre-synaptic nerve.  This creates a feedback system that repairs as well as relieving pain and other symptoms.

  • The body makes its own cannabinoids called endocannabinoids.  Everybody needs cannabinoids.  People with damaged or weakened endocannabinoid systems need medical cannabis, like diabetics needs insulin. This concept/condition is called Clinical EndoCannabinoid Deficiency (CECD).
  • CECD Patients need to rotate their cannabis strains regularly to get continued benefit.  No matter how good to start, after a week or so, it does not help.  Each cannabis strain has a unique set of cannabinoids with its unique effect on the body.  By changing and mixing different sets of cannabinoids, the neurological/immune system is constantly adapting.  Cannabinoid Rotation for CECD is similar to Opiate Rotation for Pain Management.
  • THC gets you high by bonding at the CB1 receptor in the brain.  As THC breaks down into metabolite cannabinoids, these metabolite cannabinoids bond to the CB2 Receptor.  The CB2 receptor is found throughout the body, primarily in the Immune system.
  • Non-Psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBD and CBN bond to the CB2 receptor providing relief & repair without the ‘High’.  Products made with fresh leaves & stems, are the best sources for non-psychoactive cannabinoids.
  • Getting relief from the right cannabinoids is the first step to wellness.  Relax with the confidence that you can have a higher quality of life, a renewal of health.

Detailed Explanation-

  1. Cannabinoids tell the Body how to Repair itself

Cannabinoids are unique because they tell the body how to repair itself.  Unlike any other molecule, cannabinoids send information backward … from the post-synaptic nerve back to the pre-synaptic nerve.  This creates a feedback system that teaches the body to send the correct signals (The Journal of Neuroscience, December 8, 2004).  With the correct signals, cannabinoids give the body repair as well as just relief.

Two YouTube Videos are helpful in understanding the Cannabinoid Feedback System: LEAF- Juicing Raw Cannabis and  Visualization of the Endocannabinoid Signaling System.

  1. Cannabinoids are Part of Life

Almost every creature since the dinosaurs has cannabinoid receptors.   Cannabis plants grow everywhere except the Poles.  Cannabis has been used by people forever.

Cannabinoids are a class of diverse chemical compounds that activate cannabinoid receptors. These include the endocannabinoids (produced naturally in the body by humans and animals),[1] the phytocannabinoids (found in cannabis and some other plants), and synthetic cannabinoids(produced chemically by humans). The most notable cannabinoid is the phytocannabinoid ?9tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound of cannabis.[2][3] However, there are known to exist numerous other cannabinoids with varied effects.  (Full Wikipedia Article)

  1. Every Body Needs Cannabinoids

Endocannabinoids are substances produced from within the body. A search of Google, a visit to Wikipedia and research at PubMed.gov will convince you every human has cannabinoid receptors and needs cannabinoids.

Endocannabinoids are a group of at least 5 compounds produced from within the body.  Endocannabinoids are produced as needed by the body rather than stored, making them difficult to study.

The Endocannabinoids your body produces bind at two Cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2.  CB1 receptors are found primarily in the brain and the body makes Anandamide to bond at CB1.  When you smoke marijuana, the THC binds  to CB1 and displace the Anandamide.  That is how you get the ‘Marijuana High’.    Activation of the CB1 receptors in the brain is how patients get the Relief they need.

CB2 receptor is found throughout the body, primarily found in the Immune.  Recent research indicates CB2 receptors in the Brain.  The body makes 2-AG to bond to bond to the CB2 receptor primarily in the Immune systems.  As the ‘Marijuana High’ fades the THC breaks down into metabolite cannabinoids.  These metabolite cannabinoids bond to the CB2 Receptor.  Activation of the CB2 receptors throughout the body is how a patient gets the Repair they need.

  1. Sometimes, Bodies Need Plant Cannabinoids

When you are sick or injured, your body produces cells with more cannabinoid receptors, and more endogenous cannabinoids to help with repairs.  When you recover from your illness or injury, the number of cannabinoid receptors is reduced because they are no longer needed.  Many research articles support this perspective.

If your body does not produce enough Endocannabinoids and you get sick, then you need Plant Cannabinoids to assist recovery.  Medical marijuana patients with temporary injuries or illness, experience a desire for more non-psychoactive cannabinoids usually in baked goods.  This desire diminishes with repair.

  1. Some Bodies Need Plant Cannabinoids All the Time

Some bodies never produce enough endocannabinoids.  Some bodies are constantly agitated and unable to repair damage.  Some bodies have chronic pain and spasms.  Some bodies could just barely manage until injury or aging pushed them into constant endocannabinoid deficiency.

Similar to a diabetic that does not produce enough insulin, if your body does not produce enough Endocannabinoids, then you need Plant Cannabinoids. People with damaged or weakened production of endocannabinoids need Medical Cannabis. This concept and condition is called Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency.  Dr. Ethan Russo’s publication of  Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency in 2004, is an explanation for why Medical Cannabis works for so many conditions.

CECD neurological-autoimmune conditions include Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Tourette Syndrome, and Fibromyalgia, Cancer, Arthritis, Nerve Damage, Muscle & Joint Pain, Spasms, and Sleep Disorders.  In all these conditions, the body is always moving toward a off-centered, stressed state.  No matter what drug, counseling, physical therapy or nutrition is used, the benefit only lasts a short time before the symptoms return

Most MMJ patients have CECD issues to some extent.  Only patients with CECD seek non-psychoactive cannabinoids.   However, some injury and headache patients do not seem to be CECD, because they do not benefit from non-psychoactive cannabinoids.

  1. Getting High- The Body Likes a ‘Little Help from its Friend’- THC

There are at least 66 Plant Cannabinoids but only THC gets you high. The body prefers THC over Anandamide because of a higher cellular bonding affinity at the CB1 receptor.  When you smoke marijuana, you displace Endogenous Cannabinoids.  The’ Marijuana High’ occurs during this transition.  You must not be High, to get High.  You do not get higher by smoking more.

Most bad experiences with marijuana, involve smoking marijuana after drinking alcohol.  Every Stoner Knows–  Bongs before Beer, not Beer before Bongs.  If you add in Alcohol, street drugs or certain pharmaceuticals, you will get higher but it is no longer medical use of cannabis.    The medicinal benefits of Cannabis are used to stabilize the effect of the drug, not heal the body.

  1. Medical Stoners Don’t Get Stoned

You can only get so high from just smoking marijuana.  If you smoke THC regularly, you never transition from Anandamide to THC.  Regular Medical Marijuana Users no longer really can get stoned; just mellow, comfortable & relieved.

So why would a Medical Marijuana Patient go through the legal, financial and social hassles of using Marijuana.  They need it.  They have severe Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency– CECD.

  1. Cannabinoid Rotation-  The Dance of Wellness

Rotation of multiple cannabinoids is why medical marijuana provides both relief & repair to the body.  Every Stoner Knows– Rotate your marijuana regularly.   No matter how well a particular marijuana strain helps initially, after short while, its effectiveness is diminished, unless rotated with other strains.

With neurological-autoimmune conditions, the body is always moving toward an off-centered, stressed state.  No matter what drug, counseling, physical therapy or nutrition is used, the benefit only lasts a short time before the symptoms return.

Different strains of marijuana affects patients differently.  Different strains have different combination of cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids.  Different cannabis strains have very different effects.  Endocannabinoids and Plant Cannabinoids metabolize into other cannabinoid compounds.   When multiple cannabinoids are available in abundant quantity, different cannabinoids affect different CB receptors throughout the body.  This effectively creates Cannabinoid Rotation.

Cannabinoid Rotation is similar to Opioid Rotation for Pain Management.    Changing opiate medications often and unpredictably, results in better pain management.

CECD conditions make patients feel dis-eased rather than at-ease: anxious, depressed, pain & spasms, etc.  You always want to find something else because the last therapy work well for a while but the symptom returned.  The body is never really balanced and calm.  As soon as you try one therapy, the body adjusts to the new normal and the symptoms continue.

Multiple cannabinoids never let the body ever find the new normal because the cannabinoid cellular expression is constantly changing.  Thus, the unsettling symptoms diminish and the body repairs.

  1. Pharmaceutical Cannabinoids Can’t Dance— No Rotation

Synthetic Pharmaceutical Cannbinoids are not effect medicine because they do not breakdown the way as Endocannabinoid or Plant Cannabinoids to produce useful non-psychoactive cannabinoids the body can use.

Being a single cannabinoid, it cannot provide the rotation.  Plant Cannabinoids that contain many cannabinoids that breakdown into non-psychoactive Cannabinoids.  Every cannabis strain has a different set of Cannabinoids.  The CB1 receptors bonding affinity rotates to a new strain with different cannabinoids.

Obviously, a single cannabinoid in a pharmaceutical cannot rotate to meet the need for multiple cannabinoids bonding to CB receptors with rotating bonding affinity.

  1. Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoids-   Grape Juice versus Wine

THC can get someone ‘High’, like Wine.  Non-psychoactive cannabinoids (such as CBD) provide the relief of cannabis without the ‘High’, like Grape Juice.

Cannabis does not become psychoactive until the THCa is decarboxylated, heated over 240 F and becomes THC.  THC is the only cannabinoid that really gets someone ‘High’.   Other cannabinoids have much less of a psychoactive effect, if any.

Without THC, other Cannabis Nutrients can be absorbed into the body easier.  By eliminating THC, you get more non-psychoactive cannabinoids to bind to the CB1 & CB2 receptors.  THC has the highest bonding affinity so it will displace other cannabinoids.  By eliminating/reducing THC, other Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoids can bind more effectively.

CBD (Cannabidiol), the best known Non-Psychoactive Cannabis Nutrient, is one of more than 400 compounds in Cannabis.  Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoids Nutrients includes CBD, CBN, CBG, CBC and over 100 more cannabinoids;  over 100 terpenes, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, adaptogens, and chloroplasts.

Whole Cannabis Plant: The Entourage Effect

Cannabinoid Nutrients are present throughout the whole plant. The flowers or buds have the highest concentration, followed by leaves and stems.  Medicines made from these parts are more effective than single cannabinoid such as CBD based products.  Mixing multiple whole plants together provides a greater mix of cannabinoid nutrients.  The Entourage of Cannabis Nutrients lets the body get the Cannabis it needs, where it needs it.

Different parts of the body may need different cannabinoid nutrients at the same t time.  The cellular expression of C1 and CB2 receptors changes the bonding affinity to attract different cannabis nutrients.  Different cellular expression calls for different cannabinoids.

CECD Patients need to rotate their cannabis strains regularly to get continued benefit.

Fresh, Raw Cannabis (from multiple plants) is the best source of the complete Cannabis Entourage Effect of Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoids.  Products made from Fresh, Raw Cannabis are the next best source of Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoids.

Avoid Heated products because heat drives off the volatile nutrients and may decarboxylate the THCa.  Cannabinoids freeze at 40F.  If Cannabinoids are kept under 40F, they are very stable.  Beverages made from fresh, raw material then kept frozen, would be the most stable form of Cannabis nutrients.

  1. Cannabis Research Dilemma-  Ask a Stoner

Cannabis is difficult to study in laboratories because labs do not have multi-species cannabis grows to get different cannabinoids and test on CECD Patients.

For Plant studies  Labs need different varieties of Cannabis, in different forms, harvested throughout the growing cycle to properly research Cannabis.

For Human studies, the Research must understand CECD, Cannabinoid Rotation.
